THE WHY'S AND HOW'S OF PROPER WHEEL ALIGNMENT

Misaligned wheels and tires can greatly affect your gas mileage, reduce the life of your tires and can even cause an accident during panic stops.
The most common symptoms of misalignment are a crooked steering wheel, vehicle pulling or wandering, uneven or premature tire wear, and poor handling.

Let's take a quick quiz. If you can answer "yes" to any of the following questions, you car most likely needs a wheel alignment.

  • Is the steering wheel off-center when you travel down a straight stretch of road?
  • Does the vehicle pull hard to the left or right if you release the steering wheel while traveling down a straight road?
  • Does the vehicle drift left or right in the same scenario?
  • Are any of your car's tires wearing unevenly?
  • Does your vehicle feel like it's "wandering" all over the road?
  • Do you feel a lack of control at highway speeds?
  • Do you notice squealing from the tires at normal speeds on turns?
  • Does the vehicle produce a shimmying sensation? A shimmy will feel like a back-and-forth motion in the front end versus a vibration, which will give you a constant rumbling type feeling.

To help ensure a quality alignment the first time, notify the service adviser or technician if the vehicle is used for anything unusual. For example, they need to know if you normally have the vehicle loaded with the encyclopedias you sell door-to-door or if you use the car to chauffeur 300-pound football players. The technician must compensate for that load during the alignment process, or you'll end up with a vehicle that doesn't handle properly when weighed down.

By taking these few measures to keep your vehicle properly aligned, you will minimize the vehicle's rolling resistance. This translates into fuel economy savings and reduced tire life and stress on suspension components. It also ensures the vehicle steers straight and handles as nimbly as it was designed to.
